# Matt Pocock interview notes (combined excerpts, 2023 era)

Sources: This Dot "Just Ship It" (2023), Whiskey Web & Whatnot (Aug 2023),
Unfiltered Build ep19 (Feb 2023), badass.dev Joel Hooks conversation.

## Biography
- MA in Practice of Voice and Singing, Guildford School of Acting. Former singing/voice
teacher, public-speaking coach, British accent trainer. Greater Oxford area, England.
- Started JS in 2017 (bored writing thesis; Web Audio API voice-analysis experiments).
Full-time dev 2018. Agencies -> XState core team -> Stately founding -> Vercel dev
advocate -> full-time educator (Total TypeScript, then AI Hero).
- Football fan (interviews touch Swindon Town), board games, Magic: The Gathering, Diablo.

## Direct quotes (Whiskey Web & Whatnot)
- "TypeScript gives you a different way of coding... you feel like you could just get away
  with anything."
- "For me, when I'm not using TypeScript, it feels like I'm coding in low power mode."
- "If someone gets really into TypeScript, they just love it, and they don't stop loving it."

## Craft/business philosophy (badass.dev with Joel Hooks)
- Limiting scope is smart: "doing something small, pushing it out there and just seeing
what people thought" — short videos first, course later. It exploded.
- Knew he needed backup to ship Total TypeScript; partnered rather than solo-building
  platform/payments/pricing.
- Teaching performance matters: rhythm, cadence, musicality — voice-teacher heritage
applied to screencasts (Joel: "you're teaching TypeScript for f***'s sake... how do you
  keep people engaged").

## Content advice (Unfiltered Build)
- "You need a thesis for people to follow you." / "Be useful!!"
- Migration advice: tsc init, start small, move utils files first.
- Publicly corrected his 2022 types-vs-interfaces take in 2025 ("What I Got Wrong").
